X-Ray Propagation in Tapered Waveguides: Simulation and Optimization

چکیده
We use the parabolic wave equation to study the propagation of x-rays in tapered waveguides by numercial simulation and optimization. The goal of the study is to elucidate how beam concentration can be best achieved in x-ray optical nanostructures. Such optimized waveguides can e.g. be used to investigate single biomolecules. Here, we compare tapering geometries, which can be parametrized by linear and third-order (Bézier-type) functions and can be fabricated using standard e-beam litography units. These geometries can be described in two and four-dimensional parameter spaces, respectively. In both geometries, we observe a rugged structure of the optimization problem’s “gain landscape”. Thus, the optimization of x-ray nanostructures in general will be a highly nontrivial optimization problem.

Verification of effective refraction index approach to the surface plasmon propagation in ultrathin tapered metal–dielectric–metal slot waveguides
We verify the effective refraction index approach (ERIA) developed for surface plasmon propagation in ultrathin tapered metal–dielectric–metal slot waveguides by means of comparison of exact solutions obtained within ERIA for two different profiles and different scales of tapering with finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations. We show that for smooth enough tapering, ERIA gives the p...

To a good approximation, the electromagnetic-propagation characteristics of graded-index waveguides can be written in terms of polynomial-Gaussian modes. For uniform quadratic-index waveguides the behavior of these modes is well known. However, there are sometimes practical reasons for using tapered waveguides, but detailed propagation solutions are known for only a few specific taper functions...
متن کاملNonlinear nanofocusing in tapered plasmonic waveguides.
We suggest using tapered waveguides for compensating losses of surface plasmon-polaritons in order to enhance nonlinear effects at the nanoscale. We study nonlinear plasmon self-focusing in tapered metal-dielectric-metal slot waveguides and demonstrate that, by an appropriate choice of the taper angle, we can effectively suppress the mode attenuation achieving stable propagation of a spatial pl...
متن کاملDesigning coupled-resonator optical waveguides based on high-Q tapered grating-defect resonators.
We present a systematic design of coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) based on high-Q tapered grating-defect resonators. The formalism is based on coupled-mode theory where forward and backward waveguide modes are coupled by the grating. Although applied to strong gratings (periodic air holes in single-mode silicon-on-insulator waveguides), coupled-mode theory is shown to be valid, sin...
متن کاملAcquiring molecular interference functions of X-ray coherent scattering for breast tissues by combination of simulation and experimental methods
Background: Recently, it has been indicated that X-ray coherent scatter from biological tissues can be used to access signature of tissue. Some scientists are interested in studying this effect to get early detection of breast cancer. Since experimental methods for optimization are time consuming and expensive, some scientists suggest using simulation. Monte Carlo (MC) codes are the best...
